帽子と出会いました。被ったまま寝たい感じ。

麻布十番には、それはオシャレな帽子屋さんがあります。最近色んなところに帽子の専門店ができて超高い帽子を売ってますが、そんなのとは訳がちがう。ごく小さい、とても目立たない店構え。でも、置いてある帽子はホント素敵なのです。殆どは手頃な値段で、日常から帽子を楽しんで欲しい、そんなポリシーを持っているような商店街の老舗です。その名も「とらや」さん。
以前から気になっていて、通り掛かるたびウィンドウに鼻をくっつけるように覗いていたのですが、今日初めて勇気を持って中へ。ランチに飲んだシャンパンで気が大きくなっていたのかも知れません。いえ、そうじゃなくて、MPが傘を差さずにレインジャケットと帽子だけで来ていたのを見たから。それで十番に戻って来たらベレーをステキに被っている女の子がいて、帽子の日になってしまったのです。
予想どおり、狭い店内は帽子で一杯。パリで入った手袋専門店に雰囲気が似ている気がしました。パリでその日に買った靴に合わせて手袋を買いたいとお願いしたら、お店の奥から出てくる出てくる、ボルドーの皮のエレガントな手袋。その店を思い出しました。お店の女主人はやはり帽子をこなれた被りかたで頭にちょこんと載せていて、客というよりはお茶を飲みに来たゲストのように迎えてくれました。
お店に入って最初に目についた黒いキャスケット。麻が入った一見麦藁のような帽子で横に大きなリボンがついている、シックなデザインです。被ってみたらピッタリ。そしてすごくステキ！なにより驚いたのは、女主人に被せてもらうと何故か違うのです。被りかたも一つじゃなくて、脇に寄せてみたり前を深くしてみたり、流石帽子のプロという感じ。
これまで麦わら帽子やベレーなど色々買ってはみたけど中々被り慣れず、クローゼットに放置されて来た帽子たち。考えてみたら、必要だから麦わら帽子は買うし、映画の主人公を真似てハンチングなどを買ってはみたけれど、自分に似合う帽子をプロに選んでもらったのは初めて。
他にも色々被ってみたのですが、結局最初に一目惚れしたキャスケットを買いました。
何がスゴいって、普通のユニクロワンピースでも帽子を被るだけでパリの街並を歩く感じに変身することです。しかも、本当に雨が降ってても今日くらいの小雨なら全然ヘッチャラ。水滴が逆に気持ちいいくらいです。
帽子を被るのが板につくまで暫くかかりそうですが、休日の楽しみが増えました。ステキ。

Elliot Yaminサイコー

I've been to many concerts and lives, but this one was one of the best I'd ever been to!!! I LOVE ELIOT!!!!!

ハプニングでなんと２ステージ観ることになってしまったのですが、逆に正解でした。ビルボード東京の大きさも丁度良く、観客もスゴい盛り上がってて楽しかった。それにしても、歌が上手い！！！
ちなみにエリオット・ヤミンはアメリカンアイドルで数年前に３位になったシンガーです。半端じゃないです。次回来日したら、また２ステージ観ようかと思います。

Why

Why people keep asking me what I am going to do for summer vacation? I don't like summer. Or, I should say, I don't like summer in Japan. The word "summer" doesn't bring me any pleasant feelings nor nostalgia.
Maybe, this year, I should go to Italy or perhaps to le nord. Or perhaps to New Zealand to enjoy their winter.

ようやく雨が降り始めた。

週末、映画の天使と悪魔を見てしまった。本はまだ途中。非常にもったいないことをした。明らかに本で読んだ方がよかった。ただ、ローマのロケはスゴいので、映画も一見の価値あり。

自転車で銀座に行った。目的はブルックスブラザーズのセール。確かにセール会場って玉石混在しているけれど、こんな質のいいものの中からわざわざセンスの悪いものを選ぶ人がいるものだ。
H&Mは相変わらず大混雑、あんな中で買い物が出来る人が信じられない。３０００円余計に払っても、空いているZARAやバナリパで買い物する方を選ぶ。
自転車はまだ捜索中。ますます欲しい。

Esquireが休刊と聞いて、ツタヤに行ったらバックナンバーが沢山並んでいたので大人買い。加えて、久々にとても大事にしたくなる本を見つけた。いつか読み終わったら紹介するつもり。
それにしても、わたしがPenの次に愛する雑誌がそんなにマイナーだったとは。広告が２つしか入らないa+uだってちゃんと利益出ていたのに、Esquireは何で休刊になったんだろう。

デカプリオのWorld of Liesを見た。結構つまらなかった。

最近悟ったこと。自分の欲しい生活は東京では手に入らないということ。
麻布がいいとか広尾がいいとか世田谷がいいとか、そんなセセコマしいレベルの問題ではない。東京は美しくない。

今学期最後のフランス語の授業に初めて参加した。みんな微妙に髪型が変わっていた。先生の話す内容は分かるのに、教科書はさっぱり分からない。このままだと完全に落ちこぼれる気がした。

アメリカン・アイドルが終わってしまった。最終回、アコースティック系のクリスが優勝したけど、明らかにグラムロックのアダムの方が上手い。二人でQueenの曲をデュエットしたら、Queenのメンバーが目を見張るほど声が出るアダムに対して、クリスは全然声が出ていなかった。アメリカ人ってやっぱり保守的で、爪を黒く塗っているような若者を選ぶくらいなら平凡がいい、ということなのかな。

また

風邪を引いてしまいました。今回は展開が早くて、喉が痛いと思ったら次の日は本当に具合悪くて、一日中寝てました。オレンジジュースが飲みたかったんだけど買いに行けず。。。　でも今日は頭がぐるぐるするのと鼻と耳が変な以外は、喉や熱は収まった感じ。
アメリカンアイドルが終わったら、ワインでも飲んで寝よう。

Reading

 This is truly a wonderful book, if you have slightest interest in yarn or spinning.  It teaches you how to mix colors to create those one-of-the-kind yarn.   It is interesting that fiber is like paints, if you mix various colors too much, it just becomes muddy brown.  Anyway, I know none of you are interested.  Sorry!

 

 

 

 

 

 The famous book by the physicist Richard Feynman.  I read it when I was 13 or 14, and largely influenced by it.  I borrowed all the physics books from the school library and, I confess now, never returned them.  Those books were in the library for at least several years, and no one before me ever opened them, and looked absolutely brand new.

Anyway, I know this book is very good, and could not resist buying it during my lunchtime stroll.  It's been so long, so I am sure I will enjoy it.

For some of you who do are not familiar with this book, it's published under the name "ご冗談でしょう、ファインマンさん" and it's his essays about his studies and life.  He was in a team to develop the first nuclear weapon during the WWII.  Great sense of humor.

 

 OK, I was hoping to finish this before watching the movie, but I don't know.  Heard that Angels&Demons is more interesting than the Da Vinci Code. 

I think I bought this book before, and then sold it without reading... Reading, definitely, this time.

I have been reading several novels these days, a kind that I would not recommend to anyone.  Those are light historical mysteries, the kind which you can write in modern setting and achieve the same results.  But they are good mysteries nevertheless, and I also learn very insignificant historical details like how the british society functioned in the 19th century.

Spinning Wheel

Arrived on Friday night.  My newest room mate.  The box was so huge, and I am sure the delivery guy looked smug and suppressing a laugh.  

I chose the most basic type, a spinning wheel called Traditional made by Ashford in New Zealand.  At first I was planning to buy one that is narrower and takes less space, but when I tried it I didn't like it that much.  It's unfinished wood so I am going to have to finish the surface with oil, but it's ok, for  I did not like the lacquered  wood either.

Sense of belongings

There are a kind of people who always feel that they don't belong to where they are.  Always feel that they are outsiders, feel themselves awkward, and do not have a clue how to fit in.

I am one of those people.

Schools, work, I never really felt myself being in the right place.  Perhaps the only time I felt close-to-right was when I was in High School and in Davis.  Elementary school - I was sick and weak.  Middle school - I transferred schools and disregarded rules.  College - I was sick again, besides I was very disappointed by the quality of education, and by how the real-world was forming.  Graduate school - I was shocked that people are so authoritative and aristocratic.  Went on, and on.

Perhaps, everyone feels the same.  Except for those athletic people who seem to be amazing at working in hierarchy.

These days, I feel like I'd lost many friends over to their marriages.  I hardly have common topics to talk about.  We no longer talk about our aspirations, anxieties, dreams, fear nor what we are passionate about.  I feel myself very immature and stupid to want to talk about those things.

Yet, here, I feel myself so outlandish and needing a sense of belongings.  I just can't figure out why.

I hate

I hate people with mood swings. I am like that sometimes, I admit, but I try very hard not to be like that.
I hate macaroons they sell at Tullys or Starbucks. Those macaroons taste so bad, and for some years I never thought about eating any kinds of macaroons again. I hate such lousy work, they should not have sold them in the first place.
I hate those tiled buildings that look new but kind of fake. Those tiles are very untasteful.
I hate working in buildings where you cannot open windows. It makes you sad on sunny nice days.
I hate those dusts that pile up on your balcony. It's not sand or soil, but it's exhausts from automobile - oily and dirty.

Many things I hate,
yet, there are so many more things that I absolutely love.

6月は

友達とEliot Yaminのコンサートに行きます。EliotはAmerican Idolシーズン５で準優勝（？）したアーティストで、結構お気に入り。ソウルフルな歌声がすごいです。楽しみ！！！
ちなみに、インドを舞台にしたスラムドッグ・ミリオネアは相当面白いらしいです。もうすぐ終わってしまいそうなので、見に行かないと。

A lot of pedaling

I finally accepted myself of taking a time off from my French study and playing piano. OK, piano, I am still playing, but rather sporadically.
What I have been doing or thinking about doing now is actually spinning.
Spinningとは糸を紡ぐことを意味する動詞です。Spinという言葉は古くから変わらず使われてきたらしく、それだけ古くから同じ方法で糸を紡いで生地に仕立てて、という行為が行われてきたことを物語っています。う～ん、ロマンを感じる。
なぜ繊維を束ねてよじる行為をSpinというのかというと、それは紡ぐ際に使う道具に関係しています。細い繊維を延々と捩っていくには、道具が欠かせません。道具といっても実は棒が一本あれば良くて、棒に糸を取り付けそこに繊維を絡ませて、棒を駒のように回転させます。するとヒネリが繊維に伝わってどんどん捩れ、糸が出来てきます。ひねっただけでバラバラの繊維がどんどん巻き込まれ糸になっていく様はとても不思議ですし、誰かが発見して何千年も伝わってきたのかと想像すると、心がすぐに違う世界へ旅立ってしまいそうです。
棒をより良く回転させるために円盤のようなものを取り付けた（駒のような）スピンドルという道具は、9000年以上前から少しずつ改良されながら使われてきたそうです（Wikipediaによると最初の糸が見つかったのは2万年ほど前で、棒より以前は石が使われていたらしい）。紡ぎ車はおそらくもっと最近で、でも13世紀には中東や中国やヨーロッパで絵などに描かれています。紡ぎ車もspinning wheelといい、車を回転させることでよじれを糸に伝える点は同じ。
ちなみに、産業革命時代の大発明はもちろん蒸気機関ですが、同時期に発明されたのがSpinning Jennyとうい機械（というか器械）で、これは１つのホイールで複数の糸がよじれる比較的単純なものです。これが繊維産業の大発展をもたらしたのだから、すごいものです。それまで６００年（か、それ以上）使われてきた道具が一人のアイデアで突然生産性が何倍にもなって、世界中の産業に影響を与えるんだ。農業もそうですが、そいうった突然変異的な産業の発展が歴史に与える影響を考えると、非常に興味深く思います。
まあ、そんなことはどうでもよくて、太古の昔の人がやっていた同じやり方で糸を紡いで、そしてそれを編んで（はた織りも面白いらしい）使うというのが、歴史の糸に繋がった感じがしてちょっとワクワクしてくるのです。
と、もっともらしい話をだらだら書いたのですが、なぜ毛糸を紡ぎたいと思い始めたかというと、それは毛を買いたいから！羊毛（やシルクやアルパカやコットン）は紡いでから染める方法と、染めてから紡ぐ方法があります。インターネットを見ていると、インディーズの染色作家のような人が沢山いて、その人たちの染めている羊毛がそれは素敵なのです。


毛糸も様々素敵なものがあるのですが、染色された羊毛があまりにも美しくて、絶対これだ！みたいな感じ。。。それで最近紡ぎの講習に吉祥寺に通い詰め、慣れてきたので紡ぎ車を買うことにしました。たぶん今週届くので、そしたらまた写真を載せます。今は色々と本を読んでお勉強中です。
A Lot of Paddlingっていうのは何かというと、ひとつは紡ぎ車を回すのに足でペダルを沢山漕ぐからですね。もうひとつは。。。自転車を買おうかな、と。最近あまりにも気候がいいので、気分はサイクリング！今日もほんとうは会社をサボってどこかに出かけたい気分です。

Sunday

土曜日までは元気だったのに、なんか朝起きてニュースを見ていたら理由もなく自分の人生が不安になって来て何時間か仕事をしてしまいました。いつもPC持って帰ってきても週末に開くことはないのですが、なんでこんなに不安なんだろう。落ち込んでいてフランス語を休んでしまい、さらに落ち込んでしまいました。フランス語のクラスメートから、軽井沢で私の為にマーマーレードを買って来てくれたというメールが。。。なんか無性に涙がでちゃいました。

先週は誕生日だったのですが、家族も友達も上司も覚えていてくれて、食事に沢山行きました。ボスも「約束してたよね」っていって、来週ご飯に行きます。プレゼント第一号は秘書さんからの不思議なお人形の形のペン！今度写真を載せます。結構可愛いの。学生時代の先輩が、なんと家にお花を贈ってくれてとても感動しました。お子さんの誕生日に薄い絵本をあげただけなのに、何倍にもなって返って来て申し訳ない気持ちで一杯です。今朝は韓国人の親友からやっぱりプレゼントが届いて、こちらも何故か変わったペンでびっくり。これも可愛いんだけど、絶対自分では買わない可愛さ。それがいいのかなと、面白く思いました。会社で使おうっと。

こんなに皆に良くしてもらっているのに、理由もなく仕事や自分の将来が急に不安に思えてきちゃいました。午前中は仕事をして午後はずっとかぎ針で鍋掴みを作りました。外に出るのが面倒で、家にある材料で肉じゃがを作って。。。（っていうか、家にジャガイモとタマネギと薄切りのお肉しかなかった。あとはキウイと冷凍のパンと賞味期限が切れた卵）

なんでかな〜。いい一週間だったのに。仕事は忙しいけど。

日本にずうっといると閉塞感で気が滅入ってくるのかもしれません。I really need a vacation.

Some movies

最近観た映画をいくつか。映画館にもツタヤにも行っていないので、あんまり収穫はないこの頃です。

Hitman

上司が面白かったと言っていた気がしたので借りた映画。どこの映画だろう？ブリュッセルが舞台で、全編フラマン語やドイツ語で展開した刑事もの。言葉がわからないので字幕を見なくてはいけなくて、編み物の友としては少し不適当な作品でしたが、意外と面白かった。
今にも引退しようと考えている老ヒットマンが主人公で、生まれ故郷のブリュッセルで引き受けた仕事の一つが１２歳の少女を殺すというものだったため、拒否。それで逆に依頼主に命を狙われる立場になります。一方で、その少女が関わる事件を追っていた刑事がその殺し屋の事件を捜査し始めます。刑事は老ヒットマンを追いながらも、事件の黒幕を探ることに。
あまり見慣れないヨーロッパの俳優が新鮮だったのにくわえ、老いた殺し屋が記憶も曖昧な自分に腹を立てていたりする展開が普通のハリウッド映画とは全然違って、気に入りました。そんなにすごい見せ場があるってほどじゃないんだけど。

ラブ・アペタイザー

モーガン・フリーマンが 主役っぽい役で出演するオムニバス形式のラブストーリーです。でも他のことをやりながら観ていたせいか、イマイチ話の目的が掴めないっていうか、よく分からない映画でした。いい俳優が何人も出ているので、もしかしたら真剣に観ていれば脚本がよかったのかも。。。

インフェナル・アフェア３

１と２は観たことがあったのですが、３は詰まらないと聞いていたので観ていませんでした。テレビを付けたらやっていたのですが、う〜ん、どこが現実でどこが空想なのか全然わからなくて、やっぱりイマイチ。

アルカトラズ

若かりし頃のクリント・イーストウッドが主演、実話に基づくというアルカトラズ刑務所脱走劇です。実際に刑務所が閉鎖される半年前に脱獄した犯罪者がいて、それで閉鎖が確定したのだとか。絶対に脱獄はできないということで極悪犯が収監されていたというアルカトラズですが、最後の方では施設が老朽化していたみたい。

それにしても若い頃のイーストウッドは格好良くて、存在感がありました。役者ってやっぱり、演技のうまさだけでは説明できないカリスマがキャリアを決めるんだなあ、と思った次第です。

Sock Hop

This is my Sunday accomplishment.  I recently bought a few skeins of handspun yarn online, and because they were so beautiful, I could not resist to start a project as soon as possible.  This is a photo of the yarn I am talking about:

I started my first sock project some time ago, but I guess I have chosen the wrong design because I am not making much of  a progress with it.  So this time, I decided to go for a very simple rib sock design, starting from toe.   I used this pattern, and modified a bit as I went.  It is so much fun! 

So, now I can proudly say, "I can knit a sock!!!!"

I usually prefer semi-solid colorways, rather than mixed colors.  But these days, I became attracted to handspun yarn more and more, and I guess my taste for yarn started to change.

Other projects currently underway:

(1) Featherweight Cardigan



This is going to be a light-weight simple cardigan for spring~autumn.  Knitting with a very thin yarn (sock yarn, Dream in Color Smooshy in Happy Forest), it is going to take a loooooong time.  I am already getting a bit tired of it...

(2) Green Gables cotton sweater



A short-sleeved cotton sweater in bright pink (Brown Sheep Yarn Cotton Fleece in Provincial Pink).  The color is very pretty, and it's already half done.  It's just this is another very plain knitting, and I am getting a bit tired...

I admit that I bought this CD because of the movie, but quite honestly, this album is really good.  None of the artists were familiar to me before (except Linkin Park), but they all sound great.  A pleasant surprise.



In Rainbows - Radiohead

The first song, 15 step is addictive... I like Radiohead but I had not been listening to their music for so long.  Somehow it came back to me.







John Legend

Last but not least, Mr. John Legend.  No album in particular.  It's just I listen to his live on the Internet radio the other day, and I was knocked out by his soulfulness.  How talented he is!  So I dug up his albums and the live DVD from my archive again.

RC2

先週かな、レッドクリフ２を見てきました。

期待通り面白かったです。さすがJohn Woo監督、アクションがスゴい迫力でした。俳優陣の顔ぶれもさることながら、監督の名前だけで見に行こうと思わせるほど、アクションシーンには独特の優雅さとインパクトがあります。Face/OffやBroken Arrowが有名ですが、もっと最近の作品もあるのかな。

連休中に見た中ではSeabiscuit が印象深かったです。Toby Mcguireのやせた姿が痛々しいものの、映画全体としてはとても良く出来ていて、長さを感じさせない構成でした。以前DVDを借りたことがあるのですが、その時は何故か途中で寝てしまって最後まで見れなかった。わたしは映画の途中で寝るということが殆どないので、これは非常に珍しいことなのです。今回見てみてとても面白かったので、前回見たときなんで寝ちゃったのかと不思議に思いました。

世界恐慌前後のアメリカを舞台に、シービスケットという競走馬とレッドという若い騎手、そして彼らを支え奇跡に導くスポンサーと馬のトレーナーの人生と出会いと葛藤を描いた作品です。実話だということなのですが、映画化されるのにふさわしい復活と癒しの物語です。世界恐慌の時代が舞台だということもあり、いまの世の中にたいするエールになる作品といえるかもしれません。

連休もあと１日で終わりなのに特に何もせずに過ぎてしまいました。。。１２月から編んでいたセーターが編み上がったことと、ショールを編み終えたことくらいかな。あとはIKEAで生地を買って来てスカート兼ワンピースを作りました。スゴく可愛いのですが生地がしっかりしすぎていて、あと１０回くらい洗濯しないと着れない感じです。。。ミシンを置く場所と時間さえあれば洋裁もやりたいんだけど、うちの広さじゃ到底無理ですね。

ミシンと言えば、母親の叔母の家に足踏み式の昔ながらのミシンがあって、密かにずっと狙っています。とはいえ、母の従兄弟もハトコもいて私に回ってくる見込みは殆どないのですが。。。でも欲しいという強い気持ちにかけては、私が親戚イチだという自信があります。。。足踏みミシンって今でも買えるのかな？

What if..?

What if I could never speak again?

最近ブログを読んでくれている友達から「英語だと疲れている時に読むのが面倒」と言われたので、暫くは日本語で。また英語に戻っちゃったらごめんね。

GW前の先週の木曜日から喉がイガイガし始め、GWは完全に風邪モードで家にこもっています。最悪のGWって感じです。しかも、声が出ないなんて風邪引いたの子供の頃以来？う〜ん、子供の頃でもあったかどうか。。。

実家から母親が心配して電話してくるのですが、声が出ないから喋れないって。昨日宅急便の再配達を頼もうとコールセンターに電話したものの、相手が出てから声が出ないことに気づき、ささやき声の超怪しい客になってしまいました。わたしの喉、どうしちゃったんだろう？明後日、朝一でテレカンがあるんだけど、会社に行っても喋れないんじゃどうしたらいいか分からない。。。

It's fun and tough...

Yesterday finally I scooped up some courage and went to my first Spindle class ever. There is a yarn/wool specialty store in a bit suburban part of Tokyo. (I didn't took photos of the interior, which is like "your fantasy come true" place for a yarnie)
I was surprised that Spindle is actually just a stick and some piece of wood - looks like a toy. How can you make yarn out of wool fibers with this stick? The process is amazing, you just spin the stick and the fiber get twisted... This is my first work. Ooops, kind of messy.


But it's soooo much fun! The lady at the store stood beside me almost the whole time, and added some silk or tiny wool pieces to the fiber, so that I can experiment with different texture.

So, after the class, I bought some more fiber (Romney in medium brown, VERY PRETTY!) and started to practice on my own. This took a few hours of my labour... OK, I know, it's surely efficient to just buy yarn than make your own. But it's fun, fun, fun, and so addictive!

I heard that you've got to twist 2 threads of yarn together, and steam or boil to make it stable.
Oh, the reason I wrote "tough" is because I already have some shoulder pain from spinning the stick too much...

Also in Kichijoji (Tokyo) - a super neat cafe right in front of the yarn / fiber shop. This cafe totally made me decide to move into this neighborhood! Mind blowingly cute!

OK, I haven't completely abandoned my knitting - on the contrary, I am knitting many things at once in these days.

I should credit my mom for taking this picture, although I specifically instructed her what to take. This borelo is supposed to be very short sleeved, but I made it longer - thought it is more practical. The yarn is just beautiful, looks much darker violet in reality.
Mod: For under-arm (side body), instead of CO additional stitches, I gradually increased to make it fit better.

Needles: US size 6


It seems I have a serious thing about Ysolda's designs and Sundara's yarn! The photo looks purplish, but it is pink/orange color. It is going to be a triangluar shawl for myself when it is done.





This is another work in progress - my first sock project. I know, I used to be one of those people who wonder "why do you want to knit socks when you can buy a pair for a few bucks?". But somewhere along the line, the idea of knitting a pair of socks with beautiful yarn started to grow on me...
This yarn I am knitting with is the one I dyed back in last summer in NY. I actually like it a lot.

I am about to start a few more projects. Every day is still an exciting discovery process.
