ピアノ

お友達のお友達、という感じで何度かコンサートにお邪魔しているピアニスト河合拓始さん。何を隠そう（隠してない　笑）、去年の誕生日も河合さんのライブでお祝いしていただきました。

このたび、原発事故を契機にか東京を離れることを決意されて、昨晩はお別れパーティー的なコンサートがありました。

昨日はボーカルやギター、さらにもう一人のピアニストの方との共演など、色々なジャンルの音楽が盛りだくさんな内容。河合さんの活動の幅広さを垣間見れました。

いつも思うのですが、音や音の肌触り、弾くという行為を通して何か別なものを伝えようとされている気がします。ピアノとピアニカ両弾きで演奏したジムノペティ、トイピアノ、ギターとの即興、そしてとてもメロウな自作曲など、メディア（楽器）もプロセス（弾き方）も異なるそれぞれの曲の根底にテーマがあるというか、個性があるというか。

古典的な意味での音楽、美しい旋律を決められた通りに完璧にエクセキューションする、というものではないだけに、聴き手も自由なスタンスで聴くことができます。そして、新しい体験ができる。

わたしは即興音楽にはあまり向いていないようで、音と音のつながりを辿れなくなると頭が別なことを考え出してしまうようです。昨晩も即興になったとたんに仕事の色々な懸案事項が蘇ってきて、プログラムの端にメモしてしまいました。ある意味、頭に良い刺激を受けることができたのかも。

昨晩は朝からご飯が足りずエネルギーが底を尽いてしまい、アフターパーティーの前においとましてしまったのですが、楽しい晩でした！（ちょっと仕事がてんぱっていて音楽に集中できないのもあるけど。）

Intentive Bach Course

I was looking for Richter's Matthaus-Passion CD, couldn't find it anywhere, then finally found it at a local library. I thought I was borrowing only 1 CD. Instead, below was what I received.

Quite intense? Yes.

I didn't know a public library has these things. Tax money very well spent.

Zaz

I came across an NHK program called Amazing Voice a few weeks ago, and instantly became a big fan.  The program was featuring a French artist called ZAZ on that day.
She is so amazing.

Zaz is in similar line with Adele, I think, as well as Trixie from Black Dub (which I introduced in this blog a few months ago).
As for Adele, I love this Tiny Desk Concert series from NPR radio (this series is awesome - I am subscribed to their podcast as well).  You can also watch the videos on YouTube.  They sound so effortless.  Wish I could sing like that.

CNBLUEのビデオをみてマーケ的に考える

今日はちょっと体調を崩して休んでいるので、家でブログなんてやっています。とちょうどその時、妹からCNBLUEという韓国グループのビデオが送られてきました。（スゴく可愛いの！）

今日はなんで日本語で書いているかというと、コリアン的思考の考察っぽい内容になるかな、と思っているので。韓国人の知り合いの中には日本語が出来る人もいるのですが、気を悪くしないで下さいね。わたしは韓国や韓国人や韓国ドラマとても好きです（ちょっと変な日本語？）

わたしは韓国のオフィスの人と一緒に働いていることもあり、コリアンの友人が沢山います。カタカナでコリアンと書くほど彼らは西洋的・合理的なので、あまり典型的な韓国の人ではないかもしれません。親友やその他仲の良い友人は整形してない（自分に自信がある？）なのですが、「韓国と言えば整形」という報道を耳にすると皆整形しているのではないかと疑いたくなります。

ここが文化的にジレンマのあるところで、日本人にとっては整形って「えっ」て感じですが、韓国ではごく普通のことっぽい。オフィスにも「目を二重に」くらいだったら何人もいる様子です。ただ、どうしてそこまで完璧を目指したいのか、日本人からすると不思議な感じがします。日本人はその点結構適当です。ダイエットだって失敗しても「えへへ」くらいな様子です。

上のビデオクリップを見て思うことは、「これは日本人か？」っていうことです。これまでも韓国の人は外見に関しては中国人と日本人の両方にコンプレックスなのかな、と思っていたのですが、本当にそういう気がしてきました。
個人的には、韓国には素敵な人が沢山いて、韓国的な力強さがカッコいいと思うので、わざわざ日本人のナヨナヨした感じに似せないで欲しいな〜と思うところです。

でも一方で、こういった韓国のスターが日本では大人気。世の中の中年以上の男性がどれくらい気がついているか分かりませんが、最近若い女性（友人やネイルサロン、ヘアサロンなどで働く女性）と話すと日本人の芸能人の話は一切出ません。みんな韓国ドラマや韓国スターの話ばかり（そうでない貴方は若くないかも？！）。これはどういうことか、と暫く考えているところです。

最近日本でテレビを付ければお笑い芸人ばかりで、見た目はイマイチでも面白いし味があるから大人気！
。。。と思っているのは男性だけで、やっぱり世の中の女性は逞しくてカッコいい完璧な男性像を求めているんですね。
もはや電車で見かける高校生も大学生も皆痩せてて頼り無さげな中、体格はがっしりしていて顔は日本人好みな韓国のスターがこれほど人気があるのは分かる気がします。
日本のテレビ界や芸能関係の仕事をされている方々、これまで適当にやっていても広告収入が入ってきたし、なんとなく内輪でなあなあでやってきたんじゃないかと思いますが、今後はもっと真剣にスターを発掘して育てていかないと、益々女性の心は韓国へ行くばかりだと思います（と、テレビをろくに見ないわたしが言ってもかなり説得力は無い。。）
でもね、韓国のアプローチはマーケティング的に正しくて、日本はそれが出来ていないように見えるんですよ。

韓国の人は自分にも他人にも非常に厳しく、日本人には考えられないほどエリート主義で、それに耐えられない優しい（＆激しい）心を持ったひとは自殺しちゃうような人たちです。日本人の「のほほん」とした感じはわたしも好きですが、もう少し国の外をみてスピード付けて頑張らないと、行く末不安だなあという気になります。
とはいえ、日本らしいことの良さ、美しさ、というものもあり、その辺難しいんですけどね。

芸能人に関して言えば、やっぱり日本はマーケティング的に戦略間違えているうえ、それが韓国の若い子たちにも歪みを産んでいるのではないかと想像しています。根拠はないけど。
やっぱり自分の思考も「産まれたままが美しい」という日本的な枠組みに制約されている気はスゴくしてしまいますが。なんだろう、この違和感。分かります？

The best profession in the world

The best way to experience music is to be there on stage with the orchestra. Your whole body resonates with  drums and cellos and trumpets. To experience this, being a conductor beats anything else. I imagine, once you experience it, being on a stage, it's irrevocably addictive and you would do anything in the world to do it again.

Today was the last day of a series of Beethoven Symphony concerts (link to the project site - in Japanese). The event was to play from the 1st to the 9th in four installment, spanning for 2 weeks. It was a magical experience, almost like a journey with the orchestra.

When the chorus hit the highest note, my eyes burned and my heart pounded. My very first "live" 9th. I am incredibly lucky that the first time listening to it live was this occasion. Amazing, amazing.

My seat for 4 evenings was in front rows 3rd floor balcony, which means I was practically sitting right above the stage. The sound felt so textured that I could almost touch it with my hands and tongue.

I'm no expert nor critic, but his symphonies seemed to progress as more pieces were produced. The 1st and 2nd being a little bit nervous, a lot of reference to his predecessors. By the 3rd, he gained confidence and the quality jumped. From the 4th to the 6th, he had more ideas than he could put together as one symphony. Unique melodies after another. The 7th and 8th, he became an expert, skillful master, that he could almost compose an entire symphony with his eyes closed. And I found these two a bit boring.
The 9th, the last piece, came to a completely different stage. Like the Beatles' Abby Road. It was like a music fell from the heaven.

My mind still continues to journey with thoughts on Beethoven, it's hard to return to where I physically am.

My first McKnight experience was this radio program, New Ground, hosted by Chris Douridas on KCRW several years ago, when the album first came out. Just listen. If it won't melt you, what are you made of? Me, becoming all ice cream listening to this archive recording now. Even after countless times I listen to it long time ago.

CD is good, but it cannot beat the live recording at the studio.

Journey

Journeyはその実力とは裏腹に、いまだ低評価されているバンドのひとつだと思います。アメリカン・アイドルの後のスロットに始まったGLEE!というドラマの主題歌として使われている下の曲(YouTube)など、元気になる曲からしんみりと旅に出たくなる曲まで名曲が沢山あり、アルバムはどれもベストアルバムのように良い曲揃いです。

正直言って、わたしは多分Michael JacksonよりJourneyを聴いて過ごした時間のほうが長いと思います。（そしてもっと言えばU2、そしてthe Beatles。）Journeyのアルバムを聴き返し、ついでに入手したばかりのAdam Lambertの歌を聴くにつけ、This is it!で披露されたマイケルの囁くような歌に腹が立ってきます。プロ意識無さすぎ！Bad以降これといった曲がひとつもなく、２０年間何をして過ごしていたのだろうと、悲しくなります。３０歳になるかならないかのときに人生が終わり。。。？

エルトン・ジョンもビリー・ジョエルもスティングも今だに素晴らしい声が出るし、ティナ・ターナーやシェールなどは、ヒットしていた時に既に５０を過ぎていたと思う。

ともあれ、Journeyステキです。Adamのアルバムを聴いてSteve Perryの歌声を聞いたら、Steveのほうが上手かも、と思った。父の世代はChicagoが青春らしいですが、わたしはJourneyとU2だな〜。小学校高学年からローティーンを青春というにはちょっと早いけど。



I think Journey is one of the overly under-evaluated bands out there.  I started watching Glee! this past weekend, and they use this Journey tune as kind of their theme song.  Journey's albums are full of power songs and romantic songs that makes you want to go out on a road trip in the wild.

I probably spent more time listening to Journey songs than Michael Jackson's growing up.  (and U2 and the Beatles, moreover.)  When I listen to Journey and Adam Lambert (I just got his album) now, and I am impressed again by their vocal abilities, then I started to feel angry about Michael Jackson's lack of professionalism in his later work, especially in the film This Is It!  After releasing the album Bad, he really hadn't made any great song, and, it's really sad to realized that his career and life was almost over when he was barely 30 years old.  What was he doing over the past 20 years?  In the rehearsal scenes, he was only whispering, not really singing.  Elton John and Billy Joel can still sing, so can Sting, and Tina Turner and Sher were both (perhaps) over 50 when they were in the hit chart.

Anyway, I LOVE Journey!  Everyone was amazed by Adam's vocal, but Steve Perry is probably a better vocalist.  If there was the American Idol  back then, he surely would have won.  My dad's generation had Chicago for their background music growing up, and I had Journey and U2 growing up (and of course some idol groups which I feel too ashamed to start naming ...).

Theresa Andersson

This is my most favorite artist at this very moment. The other day I was browsing through old Morning Becomes Eclectic Show on KCRW, and found Theresa's live performance back in June or May 2009. WOW. The voice, the joy, the groove. She is quite something.

Watch it on Theresa Andersson - Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW.  I first listened to it on Podcast, but video is perhaps better.  It blows you away!  And I luv luv loove Jason Bentley's voice, too.  I can listen to him all day long.

今この瞬間（ここ２週間くらい）一番気に入っているアーティストです。スウェーデンの田舎？出身らしいテレサ・アンダーソン。とにかくスゴい。通勤途中に本を読みながら聴こうと思ったら、なんと歌から耳が放せなくなってしまって気がついたら会社でした。是非Morning Becomes Eclecticのライブを聴く、または観てみてください。今CDを取り寄せ中なので、届くのが楽しみ。ちなみに、聞こえてくる音は全部その場で彼女が鳴らしている＆歌っているもので、それを複雑にサンプリングして重ねて、さらにボーカルを重ねています。

曲では、私のお気に入りはYouTubeの映像をリンクしたBirds Fly Awayです。

KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic のDJ、Jason Bentleyの声もスウィートでステキ。一日中聴いていたい。

Speaking of a soundtrack, this one from Adam Lambert in 2012 soundtrack album is quite good, too.  His singing style, which is usually overwhelming and a bit theatrical, suits motion picture theme music amazingly well, as it turned out.

Why is he gay?  Why? (OK, there is nothing wrong about it, and I am not discriminating, it's just such a loss for all the dreaming girls...)

The other day I blogged about this guy, Paolo Nutini. I had one of his song called "Million Faces" as part of the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack, and it is really great. So I bought his last album, These Streets
The album is great, and I was going to write about it on this blog again. It's kind of like Jamie Callum's mature voice singing Jason Muraz songs.

Then, the other day I was browsing through Chris Douridas Shows on KCRW, and found an episode with Paolo Nutini and his new album. You know what? I was stunned. What happened to him? He is like 23, from Scotland, and now singing like Southern blues or something. It's kind of like one day he was wearing a T-shirts and jeans, then the next day he showed up wearing a pink jacket. He's a got great voice, though.

Anyway, These Streets was great.

Oh, how I love his voice!  (English text below)

ネットラジオを聴き始めたのも、KCRW（サンタモニカのインディペンデントラジオ局）に辿り着いたのも、今聞いている色々なアーティストに出会ったのもChris Douridasからです。

Chrisはダラス出身、DJや音楽番組ホストをやりながら音楽にまつわるプロデュースを様々手がけ、「Taste Maker」と紹介されている人物。映画のサントラの監修、ラジオ局の音楽プロデューサー、AOLがネットラジオ事業を立ち上げたときの立役者（そして看板番組のDJ)、そして極めつけは、AOLのあとSteve Jobsに雇われてiTunesの立ち上げ時のいわゆるプロデューサー的役割を果たした人らしいです。（Wikipediaによる）

しかしなんといっても、長年看板DJ兼プロデューサーを勤めたKCRW。さっきも久しぶりにTune Inしたらいきなり偶然Chrisの番組をやっていて、その声の良さにしびれてしまったのでした。天職でしょう。しばらくラジオから遠ざかっていたようだったのですが、最近また結構番組を持っているみたいね。何が凄いって、やっぱりその音楽のテイストです。もう時代に揉まれた過去の名曲ではなく、全く無名のアーティストをピックアップしてプッシュするちから。

Sessions@AOLは実にいい番組でした。まだそれほど有名じゃなかったIndia Arie やAlicia Keysなどをスタジオに招いての生演奏、しかも他の人のカバーなどをギター片手に歌ったりして、珠玉の、本当にもう一度聴きたい放送ばかり。うん、もう一度聴きたい。気に入った放送があるとひたすら繰り返し、10回でも15回でも聴いた回もありました。

90年代にはテレビでライブ番組もやっていたらしく、DVDが出ています。今ちょっと気になっています。

今はもっとオジサンです。でも声は変わらない。

インターネットが出てきて何でも人気ランキングにされてしまう時代ですが、いま私が注目しているのは、あるテイストを持った個人の熱意がこもったセレクション、プロデューサー力です。今この瞬間に人気があるものが良いとは限らないと、ますますそういう気がしています。

He is the reason I started listening to the Internet Radio, how I found KCRW, and how I discovered many of my favorite musicians.

Chris Douridas is from Dallas, a famous DJ and program host, a music producer behind many award-winning soundtracks, and helped setting up AOL's web radio project and had run a popular program called Sessions@AOL.  Later on, Steve Jobs hired him to set up the iTunes business, and he acted as a music producer there, too. （From Wikipedia）

But above all, I love his shows at KCRW.  Today for the first time in several months, I tuned in on KCRW and the first thing I heard was his voice.  Some people can find their "profession" and Chris is one of them.  He not only has the voice, but the divine taste of recognizing the up-and-coming talents.

Sessions@AOL was such a wonderful program.  I remember India.Arie or Alicia Keys appeared on the show soon after they had first released their albums, and played live at the studio, with just a guitar or a piano and a vocal.  Those were so powerful.  I really want to listen to those shows again.  Very much.

These days we can see "top 10"s of everything, top 10 articles, top 10 movies, top 10 albums.  But I am more interested in the eclectic selection by someone with a taste and excellent producership.  Directionally, I think that's the way to go.  Are those rankings really the result of the "wisdom of crowds"?  I think not.

So Much Music

去年この時期、お気に入りの曲でCDを作って誕生日の人たちにプレゼントしたら意外に好評で、今年もまたやろうかな、と音楽コレクションを探っています。これまで聴いて育って持っていた音楽が、いつのまにかCDもハードディスクからも消えてなくなっていることに気づき、結構悲しくなりました。とりあえずColdplayのRush of Blood...は900円だったのでiTunesで購入（CD借りた方が安いけど。。。）Keaneの新譜も。

今年はクリスマスとバースデーソングを一曲ずつにしました。残りは好きな曲なのですが、なんかちょっとピザとショートケーキとエスカルゴを一緒に口に入れたような。。。どうもつながりが悪い気が。それもあって、最近新しいレパートリーを増やしていないものだと改めて思いました。ミーハーな曲を沢山入れようと思ったんだけど、それもつながりが悪くて殆ど却下になってしまった。R＆Bもリストをスリムダウンしたら消えてしまいました。R＆Bって節々いいメロディーはあるんだけど、結構緊張感やまとまりに欠ける感じがする。気がついてみたら、バンドはイギリスでボーカリストはアメリカ、みたいなリストになっていました。

iTunesでセレブリティ・プレイリストを色々見てみたところ、やはり選曲って難しいものだと思いました。いいな、と思ったリストはポール・マッカートニーくらいかな。

また来年に向けて音楽のストックを増やしていきます ＾−＾

いつも家にいる時はFOXをつけっぱなし率が高いのですが、何かしている時は全く見ていないことに気づきました。テレビをつけっぱなしでYouTubeを見ていたりすることも。。。
なので、しばらくのあいだ本当に見るとき以外はテレビをつけないことにしました。

MJ - This is it!

やっと映画を見てきました。土曜日に予約していたチケットは、買い物疲れて寝てしまい、勿体なかった。。。
TOHO六本木の一番大きい７番スクリーンは、連日全く隙間がないほど一杯です。映画館で見るなら、絶対ベストな環境。ほんとうに見て良かったです。

たしかにここ暫くマイケルの曲を聴いていませんでしたが、やっぱり好きなんですね。小さい頃病院のベッドの上で、ラジオから流れてくるBeat Itに心奪われました。当時ほとんど動けず個室で半分寝て過ごしていた私には、どこか遠くの世界からすごいエネルギーが電波に乗って届いたような気がしました。
初めてマイケルを見たのは、小学校４年くらいのグラミー賞の授賞式。あまりの格好良さにテレビにかじりつきました。すごかったなあ。
今回のこの映画、ただのメイキングかと思ったら大間違いでした。リハーサルなのに、音楽も歌も踊りも全部全力投球です。テープ流しながら振り付けの練習とかしているようなものだと想像していました。マイケルは喉の調子を気にしながらも、所々我を忘れて熱唱。５０歳とは思えない、全く衰えていない歌声と動きに驚嘆しました。本当に才能あったんだなあ。完璧主義者で、すごい細かい指示をバンドにしていました。あれだけ大勢の人を動かして一流のショーを組み立てて行く様は、やっぱりKing of Popという感じ。コンサート観たかったなあ。。。
映画はダンサーたちのコメントから始まり、マイケルの姿が出てきたときには思わず泣いてしまいました。あ〜マスカラが落ちる。。。とか思いながらも涙が止まらなくて、マイケルがもう居ないこの世というものを想い寂しくなりました。

The Beatles

I listen to their music ever so often, and I always struck by the music's ingenuity... Today's songs were I'll be Back and Oh Darling!  Glad that I was born in the world after the Beatles.

There was a Beatles band that used to play at the Cavern Club in Roppongi, called Silver Beats, my so huge favorite.  I am still heartbroken that the band had broken up just this past August.  The "John" really looked like John Lennon and/but really handsome, but I suspect he was the reason of their breakup.  He was so popular that he probably mistook himself as the center of everything.  Of course I was his fan, but I wanted to see the BAND rather than himself alone.  I am still thinking if I want to go back to Cavern again... I think I will, but not too sure right now.
