キョウト Knitters' view of Kyoto

週末、トクコさんと２人で「出張！」と張り切り大阪京都へ行ってきました。１日目は雨もパラパラ来ましたが（打ち合わせデーだったのでノープロブレム）、２日目の京都散策（完全に観光）は上の写真のとおり快晴！山が本当に美しく、思わず写真を撮りました。

前回京都に行った時には行けずにとっても悲しい気持ちになった、アヴリルの本店。なんと、アヴリルのお店に行くのは初なのです（会員にはなっているけれど）。
やっぱり夢のような世界でしたー！尊敬しちゃいます。

店内には可愛いキットが沢山あって、その中で下の写真中央のイヤーマフのキットを買いました。あっという間にできます。

三条から烏丸のあたりは手芸や雑貨やさんのメッカ。下はインドなどから輸入されたリボンテープが大量にあるお店。

そして、アジアン雑貨の草分けという（京都に住んだ経験のあるトクコ情報）お店でとっても気に入った鏡たち。買いたかったけど、今回は我慢。

ランチは錦市場を散策して行き当たったおばんざい定食が食べられるお店で。

他にも可愛いものを買ったのですが、それはまた今度。amirisu次号でも写真として使おうと思っています。
関西にはまた近いうちに行くことになってます。今から楽しみ！

Harvest

週末に新潟から届いた魚沼コシヒカリの新米を炊いていて、そうだ、新潟の写真をブログに載せていなかった、と思い出した。アートトリエンナーレを見に行ったのだけど、一番心惹かれたのは昔ながらの棚田と、光り輝く稲穂。
みなさんも、ちょっと黄金の光を浴びながら、深く息をしてみてください。

Last weekend, I was cooking newly harvested rice just delivered from Nigata.  It reminded me that I had not blogged these photos yet.  This is where the best rice in Japan comes from.  I went there to see the art triennale festival, but was more fascinated by the golden scenery.

今日は会社を休んで長瀞にカヌーに行ってきました。
１０月に塘路で泊まった「とうろの宿」のオーナーご夫婦が主催しているカヌー教室。明日明後日で行きたいと思ったところ満員で（２０人！）、どういうわけか有休を取る決意（申し込んだ時に何を考えていたか思い出せなくて）。でも今日は参加者４人だけだったので、最高でした。長瀞の紅葉も今が見頃！
I took a day off from work, and went canoeing in the river up 2 hours north from Tokyo.  I found out about this canoe lesson from a couple who owns a lodge in Toro, Hokkaido, where I stayed a month ago.  The owner is originally from this region, and he hosts lessons every year at this time of the season.
I wanted to join the 2 day lesson on the weekend, but it was already full (20 people!).  I turned out to be lucky because the weather was perfect today, and there were only 4 of us in the lesson.

実をいうと秩父の方へ来たのは生まれて初めて。東武東上線にも生まれて初めて乗り、あ、川越ってこんなところにあるのか、と知りました。でも長瀞エリアまで家からドアツードアで２時間なので、結構近いでしょ。

カヌー、自分でちゃんと漕いだのも初めて。今までツアーでいかにガイドさんが漕いでくれていたか思い知りましたよ。腕と肩がすごく疲れてふらふらです。カヤックと違って、一方だけを漕ぎ続けるということも発見。身体が捻れそうな気がするんですけど。
しかも、昨日ピラティスに行ったばかりなので、背中の奥が筋肉痛なのです。

It was the first time I canoed with my own effort.  I had been on a couple of tours, but now I understand those were not really canoeing.  I was just sitting on a boat that someone was canoeing.
It turned out to be much harder than I thought, and I am completely exhausted now.  But, it was soooo beautiful with foliage and warm sunlight.

でも、景色は最高。長瀞だと知らなければ、海外のジャングルクルーズみたい。

午前中は深く流れの余りない場所で練習し、午後は川下り。下のような岩場から出発なんだけど、無理でしょ。と思いつつ、なんとか漕ぎ出ました。

秩父鉄道１駅分、カヌーで下りました。途中休憩を入れたり、練習をしてぐるぐる回ったりしながら３時間くらい。相当疲れたけど、最後は陸に上がるのがもったいない気持ちでした。紅葉が奇麗すぎて。水上から水鳥の群れと一緒に見上げる木々は、また特別に見えました。
In the morning, we learned different strokes and how to maneuver in the water.  After lunch, we went down the river all afternoon.  At 3:30, I was truly tired but it was too beautiful to call it a day.

上がったあと、先生がぜんざいを作ってくれて、温まりました。わたしは夕飯代わりに（せこい）お餅２個を頂きました。
素晴らしい人たちと景色に囲まれて１日全身運動（腕も脚も超疲れた）をした、秋のカヌー日和でした。まだ水に浮いている感じがする。
After the lesson, the instructor cooked us Japanese sweet with red beans and mochi.  I had a beautiful wonderful day (and going to bed at 7:30PM).  I still feel like floating on the water.

山行き。I finally bought a big backpack.

昨日、ついに、山用のバックパックを買ってしまいました。
これ。

ハイキング行ったりする用に小さいリュックは持っているのだけど、それは２年前のある日、今年はハイキングをしたいなあと思い神田のアウトドアショップに行って、何となく場違いな思いをしながらこっそり適当に選んだものです。お店の人に相談するのも恥ずかしく（どんなのが欲しいのか聞かれて吃る自分が想像できた）、完全に見た目だけで選びました。色が可愛かったから。今考えてみるとカバーも付いているし、それなりに機能的ではあったんだけど、とにかく物が入りません。

とはいえ、普通の日帰りハイクをするには十分な大きさ。大きなリュックを買うということは、いつかゴローの登山靴をオーダーメードするのと同じくらい、ちゃんと使いこなせるかドキドキするものです。かなりのコミットが必要。後戻りできない感漂う買い物です。

さて。

山道具の本を見るに付け、「沢山背負ってピッタリするものを」とおせっかいなぐらい書いてあるので（前回の選び方がより一層反省される）、何時間も迷う覚悟を決めて出かけました。
そしてお店に着いて呆然。やっぱり、相談しなきゃ無理でしょ。種類が多すぎます。最初から諦めてお店で店員のおじさんに話しかけ、先ずは背負い方から教えてもらいました。この一杯出ている紐の引っ張りかた、初めて知った！今までリュックの紐って邪魔だなあと思ってました（笑）。

最初に見た目が気に入らなくても、とにかく沢山背負ってみたのが良かった。腰へのフィットや重心の掛かり方が、それぞれ全然違いました。しかも、重りを入れてもらったらまた違う。最終的に買ったカリマーの４０リットルは一番最初に試してみたものだけど、腰にピッタリ来るのと背が高すぎない（私背が低いので）ので、決めました。色も気に入ったし。
「最初からこれが欲しいと決めてくるお客さんは助けられませんね」、と店員さん。皆さんもいつか登山用のリュックを買う際は、兎に角相談してみて下さいね。

４０リットルあれば、寒い時期でも１泊くらいできるとのこと。もう方々の山小屋閉まっているとのことですが、出来たら１１月前半に行きたいな。amirisuの打ち合わせがあるので、空いている週末が余りなく、１１月の後半はもうアウトだそうなのです。

そうだ。パタゴニアストアにて行われた松本紀夫さんのフォトライブ、素晴らしかったです。写真がものすごく、溜め息が出るくらい、あり得ないくらい奇麗で、松本さんのお話がまた楽しかった。パタゴニアもまた好きになりました。

Morro D'Oro

So, this is where I had been.
People at work ask me, "Where had you been?"
I answer "Italy, near Rome."
People: "Where did you go?  What did you see?"
Me: "Um, olive trees, vineyards, hills, dogs, and small villages.  And I knitted and painted."
People: "..... that must have been spectacular..."
Yes, it was spectacular.  It's just my words cannot do justice.

And the town of Morro D'Oro is on the background of below photo (taken at a pool side where I stayed).  I was swimming there, too.

イタリアの写真を少しアップします。
会社で色々聞かれます。「どこに行ってたの？」
私は答えます。「イタリアです。ローマの近く。」
同僚「どこまわったの？何を見たの？」
私「えーと、オリーブの木とぶどう畑と、小さい村と、犬と、丘と。。。編み物して絵を描いてました。あ、半日だけローマ。」
同僚「。。。。それは。。。良さそうだね。。。」
はい、すごく良かったです。でも言葉では説明できません。

上の写真は、毎日散歩している間に見つけたお気に入りのスポットから撮った、アドリア海を臨む景色です。Morro D'Oroの村は、下の写真のプールサイドにあるハンモックの向こうに見えます。あと、一番下の写真がそうです。

An ending, a beginning, and a new challenge

Yes, it's my car.  Well, technically, it's a car that I rented and drove.
For the first time in my life.

As I have written a couple of weeks ago, I did took driving lessons, and did go on a road trip on my own.  I have some tiny agony in myself because driving a car with only one passenger is so environmentally unfriendly.  I was rather proud of myself not driving at all.  But, it was fun.

I feel a bit sentimental, because one of the projects I have been working on at work is almost complete, and is about to be launched in a few days.  It has been a long way.  In the beginning, there was so little interest in the entire concept.  Now, many people support our efforts.  I almost cried at work.

I feel conscious about beginnings/endings today.  On returning from my vacation, I discovered that the summer had completely gone, and it's already deep in fall.  Fall is the season I start a new year.  I start many things from fall.  It's the beginning of my personal fiscal year.  I feel reborn.

It's also because the production for amirisu's second issue is just starting now.  And I have another secret project, and also another end/beginning thing happening as well.  A piece of news was waiting for me in Tokyo, and I am pretty excited about it.

During my vacation, I stayed beside the Japan's biggest wetland area, and went canoeing in the river that runs through it.  The whole driving/visiting a new place/canoeing/meeting new people experiences awakened my senses, and gave me new perspectives.

The owner of the B&B and canoe instructor is an immigrant from Tokyo.  We talked about a lot of things, such as life changing decisions, while we canoed in the pristine landscape.  He moved there when he was my age, and got married just 5 years ago.  He is extremely happy and says he has no regrets.  I envy him from the bottom of my heart.

That was, probably, a sign and a new beginning.
I feel like a whole new experience is spreading in front of me.

We'll see.

The end of the journey

２週間ぶりに家に帰って来ました。
ほっとした。
今回は長く休んでいたにも関わらず、イタリアの１０日間は半分仕事だったし、結構プラスマイナスゼロの旅でした。道東に行かなかったら、海の泡となって消えていたかもしれません。
前回は「イタリア大好き！」といって帰って来た記憶があるのに、今回は「もう暫く行かなくていいな〜」という気分。トスカーナは間違いなく大好きなんだけど、なんかね、ローマは好きじゃない。アブルッツォも田舎でワインとか美味しいんだけど。。。北海道の方がいいなー。
いや、元々精魂疲れ果てて旅に出たので、マイナス２０くらいから始まっているのですよ。それがプラスになる前に色々とあったので、ローマの喧噪に耐えられなかったのです。
イタリアで更に疲れた理由その１：
参加したSquam Art Workshopsイタリア(Squamitalia)のスポンサーもしていたので、宣伝キットの準備やら（そして共同スポンサーしてくれた会社からの荷物が届いているかの心配も）、オープニングでの挨拶やら、ニッターさんたちへアピールするために一緒に編んだり、次号のための取材準備をして取材をしたり、と結構忙しかったのでした。全然自分の時間がなかったから、アクティビティにも参加せず。
その２：複数の超ワガママな参加者に翻弄された方々の相談にのったりお手伝いをしたり、気疲れ。
その３：イタリア人やアメリカ人の皆さんの大げさな表現に合わせるのに疲れた。わたし日本人の平均からしてもフラットで起伏の無い性格なので、１０日間もAmazing!とか言ってられないみたいです。いや、疲れてなければ、全然対応可能です。

その中で不幸中の幸いは、本当に仲良くなった友人たちと、そして最高のルームメイト！美味しいオリーブオイルを買ってきたこと、それから写真も沢山撮って来たよ。
そして、北海道はやっぱりスペシャルでした。もう心は決まっています。写真交えて紹介します。

I'm back home after two weeks of travel.
Home sweet home.
Although I had been away for 2 weeks on vacation, my Italy trip was not completely a vacation, I was working half the time, worrying about many things, in a very bad Internet connection.
I had been completely utterly exhausted when I arrived in Italy, what with crazy working schedule in the past few months, that my energy level was like at -20.  So, I couldn't bear the sun, the party, the worrying, and ups & downs of emotions of Italian people.  Of course, taking Flora Bowley's class with Susannah Conway (and with 13 other wonderful women with great stories), and walking around the city of Rome with Elizabeth were absolutely amazing.
In fact, I really enjoyed painting this time, very happy about the results, and had such great fun knitting with many like-minded people around the world.  I made several very special friends, and my roommate was a rockstar (I adore her so much).
My Hokkaido trip was also very special.  I think my mind is pretty much made up in several aspects.

Voyage and Adventure

I'm off to yet another adventure in several hours.
And am still working. At 2 AM.

Leaving high heels behind in Tokyo, bringing only flats, I will be down on the ground, feeling the earth closer.

I'll be down at this villa in Italy, and then go wondering in the northern land.  I promise I will bring back massive amount of energy for you.

あと何時間後かのフライトで旅に出ます。
午前２時なのにまだ仕事してます。

普段のハイヒールは東京に置いて、フラットシューズで地面を沢山歩き、地球からエネルギーをもらって来ます。

イタリアのヴィラで大勢のクリエイティブな人たちと一緒に絵を描いて、それから知床に。エネルギー満タン、ハイスピリットで帰ってくると思う。お楽しみに。

Siena Love

It is the town I love. Period.
Siena is of course famous for the piazza, and the festival, and may be the toscan cuisine, or perhaps the bank.  But it was the streets that captures you and try to bring you back there.

Since how long ago people ventured through these narrow paths and looked up the sky?  What did they feel?

シエナ、大好き。
カンポ広場やお祭りや、トスカーナの料理や、もしかしたら金融で有名なのかもしれないけど。でもシエナの細い通りや曲がり角に魅惑されて、またシエナに戻りたいと思う。

どれくらい昔から、どんな人がこの通りを通って空を見上げていたのだろう？そのとき、何を考えていたのだろう？

We stayed in the city overnight, and dined at this restaurant.  It could be the best food we'd had in Italy this time.  I cannot remember the name of the place, but if you ever visit the town, this is the place to go.
このレストラン。名前は忘れちゃったんだけど、今回イタリアで食べたご飯の中で一番おいしかった。シエナに行ったら是非ここでご飯。

And the evenings.

The cathedral in Siena seems to be often compared to the one in Florence.  They are completely different, and incomparable.  It is mind-blowingly decorative, I didn't know what to say - whether it was great, beautiful, or banal or grotesque.
聖堂はよくフィレンツェとも比較されるということなのだけど、あまりにも違うので比べようがない。装飾が多すぎて、凄いのか格好わるいのか、センスいいのか悪いのか、全然わからない。でも、全体としてみて迫力があるし、完成度が高い。

I loved these Harry Potter-ish books in their museum.
