I want to be her...

ブログお久しぶりです。スローな回復をしつつ怠惰な毎日を過ごしていたので、あまり書くことがなくて間が空いてしまいました。って言うほどでもないか。会社の方から誘ってもらってフラメンコのライブを観に行ったり、会社の定例囲碁ランチが日経アソシエの取材を受けたりしました。
お陰さまで、ここ１週間体力が回復してきました。そろそろ散歩でもしたいところですが、外が暑すぎて。（と、言い訳をして一日中編み物をする。。。）

そういえばここ最近ちょこちょこと小説も読んでいるのですが、突然ハリーポッターの７巻が読みたくなって２度目に突入。
なんせ１度目は（２度も読むなっていう声も聞こえてきますが。。。）スゴい勢いで読んだので、どうも細かいところを覚えていなくて何が何だったか良く分からないのです。映画の６作目の最後も最後、謎の人物のイニシャル（R.A.B)が出てくるのですが、あれ、誰だったっけ？という感じ。

ともあれ、本を読んでいたらやっぱりカバーの挿絵を描いているMary Grandpreというイラストレーターが気になって、またAmazonやGoogleで検索。
以前もブログに描きましたが、彼女の絵が大好きで、絵本も数冊持っています。日本で手に入るのは余りないのですが、「とにかくもっと見たい〜」と米国Amazonからも買ってしまいました。
今日の収穫としてさらに５冊くらい購入。それから、本では出版されていないハリーポッターの絵がネットで沢山見られることも発見しました。Googleで画像検索してみてくださいね。

もうひとつ大発見したのは、Maryが数年前の展覧会の際、美術館で子供（＆大人）向けにレクチャーとデモンストレーションをした映像がネットで見られるのです！！！！

１時間程度のトークで私はスゴく沢山のことを学びました。なによりスゴいのが、Harryを描く姿が観られる！
彼女の絵の素晴らしいところは（１）複雑に重なりあい、かつ混じり合う色、（２）大胆で独創的な構図、（３）デフォルメとリアリティーのバランス、（４）隅々まで動きのあるキャラクターやオブジェ。。。。挙げればキリがありません。でもとりわけスゴいと思うのは、普通に私たちが目にするものが思いがけない形で表現されているところ。
どこからこのような着想を得るのか、どのようにキャラクターを作っていくのか、そのあたりが存分に（しかも子供相手に！）語られていて、面白かった〜〜。もっと観たかった。

もうひとつの収穫は、パステルの使い方です。
Maryの絵が好きなもうひとつの理由は、わたしもパステルが一番好きだから。
油絵や色鉛筆、水彩などどれも楽しいけれど、やっぱりパステル画が一番好き。
留学していた時インテリアデザインの授業を取っていた際もパースや図面など総てパステルを使っていて、教授に珍しがられました。扱いを間違えると図面は汚れるんだけど、あの深い色は色鉛筆や水彩では出せないし、あのテキスチャーは油絵では難しい（一番近いけど）。
そんな大好きな画材を彼女がどんな風に重ねて描くのかが観られて大大満足の映像でした。

本当に、彼女になりたい。あんな絵が描きたい。。。

いつか幸運にも結婚することができたら、仕事を辞めてイラストを描いたりとかしたいです。で、それで絵に夢中になって食事の支度もせず、旦那さんに見捨てられ絵も売れず、路頭に迷う姿が目に浮かぶ。。。やっぱり駄目だ（笑）。


It's been a while since I last updated this blog and I apologize for that. I haven't done much while recovering these days, except for intensive (really intensive, believe me) knitting and watching soccer games (oh, yes, I had forgotten about this).
But I do read a little bit, especially some fictions, and somehow I got around to start my second round of Harry Potter book 7. The first time was read in such a rush that I don't really remember any details. I don't even remember who R.A.B was... and I still don't, because I am only the beginning of the book.
So, I picked up the book and my passion for the illustration by Mary Grandpre returned as well.

I have written about how I love the work of Mary Grandpre in this blog before, but I wouldn't mind repeating myself. She is best known for her work for the American version of Harry Potter books, and I think her imaginative and comical drawings is one of the reason the series became so huge. I love her work so much and I already have a few of her other children's books, but I ordered a few more today. I just wanted to see more.

I didn't know until today that she also drawn many unpublished Harry Potter pictures, and you can see them if you google her name in Google Image Search. I also found this amazing lecture by her several years back. This is fascinating, and I recommend this to anyone who are interested in drawing.

It's pretty long, about an hour I think, and I learned soooooo much from her talk. You can also watch her draw Harry Potter!!

There are many great things about her art - (1) the deep and rich layers and blends of diverse colors, (2) fascinating composition, (3) balance between deforme and reality, and (4) the unique and lively characters that fill every part of the picture, and more. But what I feel the greatest is how she interprets ordinary and common objects into something magical and imaginative. She talks about how she interprets what she sees into a magical object. Must see.

Pastel is the most favorite art media of mine, and this is one of the reason I love her work. I sometimes work with oil paints, water colors and colored pencils, but pastel is far better for me. I even used it for my design drawings while I was studying landscape architecture and interior design. So, it was really great to see how Mary works with pastel in the movie.

So, in short, I want to be her. I wish I could draw like she does...
