Imagination

Now that all the Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter series had been made into films, I had thought that the genre is so over.
I was so wrong.
Reading these two books made me change my opinion.

Both are the first book (or one of the first books) written by young authors, so they are hardly perfect. But the richness of their imaginations truly wow-ed me.

The Night Circus (Amazon.com)

This book was chosen as one of the Amazon's Best Book of 2011. I totally agree. It was probably the best I've read since the last of Harry Potter. The writing is magical, full of images and colors (and the lack of them), and the drama!
The story is a bit hard to follow. Until the halfway through, I wasn't able to connect the dots and had no idea how the pieces were coming together. But they did, in a very interesting way.

I hope they won't turn this book into a movie too soon. I want people to read it instead of watching the film first. Please.

Daughter of Bone and Smoke (Amazon.com)

This book is more like "if you like a vampire romance, you'll love this too" kind of book, but still, the world the author has created is pretty amazing. The storyline is very unusual yet well devised. I have only 2 complaints: that the writing style is a bit overly decorative (reminds me of Anne of Green Gables when Anne's writing was too dramatic), and that some details, such as angels having had to shave, seem awkward in the context of the whole mystical theme.

Nevertheless, the author is still pretty young, and very promising.

Squam

It's like receiving a postcard from a dear friend overseas.
A totally new Squam Art Workshop website is up today.
I know, it's just a website, but somehow it's a bit emotional and overwhelming.
Feels like we are all invited back to SAW, and once again we become full of hopes and expectations.

Squam Art Workshop

My little contribution is also there. (please forgive me for my bad writing at the last minute... hopefully I get to brush it up a little bit.)

Join us next year!

Still doing what I am doing

Hi dear friends!  It's been a while since I last posted here.  Those of you who are on Facebook should know that I am still alive - yes, I am.

It's been just so busy both at work and at home, that I hardly had time to think about what to write.  Besides, something is wrong with my camera that I cannot upload photos.  I am trying to make it a rule to add at least one photo.

So here it is - if you remember about my weekly weaving lessons, this is how it ended up.  The first project - a scarf - has finally been done.  It's pretty colorful and cute, which makes me thrilled.
It is 100% hand made.  My teacher had dyed the wool with all natural ingredients, I carded the wool and spun the yarn, then I weaved the yarn with handmade tools.  The whole experience was totally exhilarating.

I will post some photos of the finished project soon.

Ikaho

My friends and I took a weekend trip to Ikaho hot spring area.  My camera quickly went out of battery unfortunately, but I managed to capture some reds and yellows and blues.

Went to watch Moneyball on Monday.  I've read the book years ago, but the movie still felt extremely good.  I have been quite busy these days with plans and strategies, so the story was kind of perfect.
I am super excited today because a friend of mine decided to join me for the Hokkaido trip in December.  I have been telling about my plan to everyone, and finally succeeded in recruiting!

Wanderlust

I know it's totally crazy but I am thinking about going back to the deserted and frozen land in the north during my winter break.  I wish I had a second house there.
This year, I thought about driving a bit, because you can't really go anywhere without driving in the region.  Last year my movement was limited to the immediate surroundings of the hotels.  But when I was surfing on the Internet about driving tips in winter in the region, all the comments were saying "DON'T DRIVE.  DON'T TRY TO KILL ANYONE".  OK.  I guess I have to give up on the idea of skating on the ice with a rental car.
So I will probably be walking in the snow, canoeing in the freezing cold, knitting and reading in front of a fireplace, and drinking wine by myself.
Yey, can't wait!

Comfort Knitting

I am a scarf knitter these days.  I haven't knitted a single sweater since September, even though the weather is becoming wooly week by week.  Sweater knitting requires a strong will, good memory, persistence, and a lot of time.  Not for me, right now.

But what I can tell you is that I am a better knitter these days.  I can't say since when, but I became comfortable knitting something without a pattern, like, just pick a good yarn and swatch and calculate and start knitting.  This is really new to me.

This feeling of discovery is kind of like when I was still studying English.  Learning something is like climbing giant steps.  You try and try and try, then one day you find yourself on top of the giant step that you were trying to climb.  But there is another step in front of you.

A bulky snood, just completed.

Chicago

This is the second batch of my Chicago photos.  In fact, I took tons of photos in Chicago.  The city was so beautiful.
A lot of people recommended the architectural boat tour, and I did join it.  The tour is run by Chicago Architectural Foundation and the guides are all volunteers.
A wonderful tour.
I wanted to check out the names of the buildings I saw, but well, hope one day you will get on the boat and figure them out yourself. ;)

The thing is, the old and new buildings, they all have stories. Contexts. The reason why they look like they do.  And the reasons are, unlike in Japan, not something solely governed by the unseen lines in the air (height regulation and such), but the city's history and design motifs and people's lives.  They are very well educated group of architects, indeed.

There are the classical ones,
... and the quite unique ones,
and the ones that reflects them on their surfaces.

And, Mies' masterpiece.

So many buildings have great textures and details.  Even Seven Eleven is housed in a historic building.

The other thing I loved was that the lower parts of the buildings are parking lots (like below).  So, you don't see vast open concrete surfaces in the city center.

And some pretty alleys and balconies.  I'd LOVE to live in this corner room...!!!!!!
