Mountains.Socks.

One of many things that I thought I would never do - is reading this famous magazine for mountain climbers in Japan.

The magazine is quite famous so I had known about it all my life. But the words "climbing and trekking" always reminded me of sweaty mountaineers or, more recently, retired hikers wearing all brownish clothes.

But hiking and trekking have become quite popular and common in Japan among younger women. I just thought I would never get to that myself.

Once I decided to start hiking, I started looking around for books (typical me). Found this book - a styling book for girls who love trekking. People contributing to the book are models and fashion stylists, so everything looks quite nice. I am now totally into the world of mountain gear.
It's hard to describe why. It could be the color scheme very specific to mountain gears, or the combination of hi-tech and low-tech. Or, it could be the unique blend of masculine and feminine styles.
Gore-tech jackets and hand-crafted leather shoes. High-tech T-shirts and wooden handmade cups. Hand-knitted socks.

There is also a magazine called Hutte for female trekkers.

This magazine, called Randonee, is more for "girls" with red and pink.

Another culture magazine, one of my favorites, is featuring literature related to mountaineers.

This is when I remembered about an article on hand-knitted socks. Kunio Igaya, a pioneer in Japanese skiing throughout the early 20th century, used to knit a lot in order to make a perfect pair. He spent 8 years to perfect a design that can be tailored to almost anyone. I read the article a few years ago, loved it, and now, I am fascinated by it.

The article also explains his pattern, which turned out to be impossible to decipher. He taught himself how to knit, and had created his own recording mechanism. I spent more than a week reading and re-reading and taking notes, and finally became confident enough to cast on.

Once I started around Saturday midnight, I could not stop. I ended up knitting until 4 in the morning. It was so fun and interesting.

I don't stay up to knit. Knitting usually makes me sleepy, so this is a rare thing.

For soles, I used 5 threads of yarn. Look at how beautiful the color is!

So, I could not go hiking on Sunday as I had planned. But I managed to finish a pair. It was a happy Sunday.
