Face Forwardとメークについてのメモ　（日本語は英語のあとに）

After the previous posts on makeups more than a year ago (sorry, in Japanese), I haven't had a chance to update my recent explorations.
Face Forward, a book by a celebrity make-up artist Kevyn Aucoin published in 2002. Unfortunately he passed away that same year, but the book still looks relevant and fascinating. Some people mentioned that there are too little Asian representation in the book, but I found the book rather universal regardless of the people's ethnicity, because there are so many different types of faces on this book. Usually in the fashion magazines, you only get to see a specific type of a beautiful model's face that you instantly realize you cannot recreate it on your face. You will be amazed what make-ups can do, how it can help a person (not just women but men as well) to glow.
One of the lessons I learned from this book are the tools and materials. Kevyn shows what he used to use for his work in an unbiased way, without any labels or brand names. And I realized the importance of the tools you use, similar to when you paint or draw. He advises to spend a little bit more on your tool than your normal budget, and you will not regret it. The other book I read, Plastic Surgery Without the Surgery: The Miracle of Makeup Techniques, did an interesting test. A makeup artist compared one work using expensive cosmetics with OK brushes, the other work using drugstore cosmetics with top quality brushes. And the latter created a better result. Since then, I started buying brushes.
The other striking thing is Julia Roberts' skin! It's crucial to have a very good surface to start with.  I learned some new facts that may help skin condition to be better, but that will be in a future post.

前回メークアップについて書いてから、1年以上時間が空きました。その間にも色々と探索は続けています。そのうちのひとつは、有名なメークアップアーティストとして活躍した（故人）ケヴィン・オークウィン（Kevyn Aucoin：英語読みでオークウィンっていうので正しいのか不明。。。オーコワンと読みそうだが）のFace Forwardです。これまでの人生でファッション誌のメーク特集は読みつくした感がありましたが、そういった記事をいくら読んでも渇望感があった理由がこの本を見て分かりました。ファッション誌の記事に出てくる典型的なモデル顔に最新の化粧品をいくら乗せてみても、それを自分の顔でどう再現したらいいかがピンと来ないのです。その点、とても様々な顔に様々なメークを施す本書を見ると、メークの要諦がほんわかと浮かび上がってきます。道具や素材の使い方も学べます。メークによって顔全体にどのような変化がもたらされるか、魅力的になるか、驚くばかりです。

この本で学んだことのひとつに、道具の大切さがあります。彼が使っている道具やコスメの一覧にはブランド名は一切入っておらず、その分先入観なしに自分に必要な道具を想像することが出来ます。同じものを手に入れないとメークが出来ないとは思って欲しくないからだそう。（そしてメークアップアイテムは直ぐ廃盤になる。）彼はまた、「予定している予算より少しだけ上乗せして、出来る範囲で少しでも良いものを手に入れたほうが後悔しない」と書いています。考えてみたら当然。プロの熟練技がない素人が、駄目な道具で似たような効果を得ようと思っても無理なのです。別なメークの本には（英文のリンク参照）実験として、高いコスメを適当な道具で使う vs. 安いスーパーコスメをプロ用のブラシで使う、というのを比べて見たところ、後者のほうが良い仕上がりだったことが書いてあります。シャドウについてくるチップでメークするなんてNGだそう。それ以来、わたしはブラシを買い始めました。

それにしても驚くのはジュリアロバーツの肌！すっごく奇麗。最近またスキンケアとファンデーションの研究もしているので、また別な記事で書きます。
